Rules to Live By

January 29, 2009

Good to see you! I hope your week has gone well so far. The Office is on tonight, so that’s good news!

Lost is officially about to make my head explode. That show is full of craziness and science fiction and wonderful characters, and (my roommate thinks) the Trinity. Umm, we’ll see. Seriously, though, who knows?! Anything could be happening with this crazy island of craziness. What the heck is going on?!

Today I think, is a good day for me to share some of my far-reaching wisdom with you. That’s right, it’s your lucky day! When I was in college, I worked at camp every summer. I had some awesome friends, and one of them started keeping a list of his personal “rules.” Some of us followed along, and we basically each wrote out our personal list of things we wanted to do, quotes we liked, advice to ourselves, and so on. I’ve had mine for awhile and it’s kind of fun to look back on my “rules.” It basically turned into a way of journaling, and I have some neat reminders of things I was doing at the time, or things I wanted to do with my life. They’re random — some fun, some serious — and here are a few for you in no particular order:

4. Read the Psalms every day.

9. Try to be direct with people — don’t play games.

15. Get a black belt in Keeping it Real.

18. Watch the news (but don’t necessarily believe it).

21. Be friends with Jesus.

23. Eat avocados.

24. Play with kids between the ages of 3-5. They are funny and awesome.

32. Smile at people.

36. Go for walks.

37. Be humble.

49. Watch Waiting for Guffman every few months.

53. Watch home videos — party to remain humble, and partly to remember the good times.

54. Learn to play guitar.

60. Save money.

67. Don’t worry about tomorrow for tomorrow will worry about itself.

68. Have inside jokes with people.

70. Don’t let the man get you down.

71. Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not men.

76. Don’t take your dreams literally. It was a dream.

So, there’s a sampling. I’ll share some more in the future. Some of these I actually do, and others I wish I did. So far I only have a purple belt in Keeping it Real, but I’m working on it.

What are some of your “rules to live by”? Share them with me — if they’re awesome, I may have to steal a few to add to mine.

    Here’s mine.

Buy nice underwear. Even if you’re the only one who sees it, you’ll feel sexier when you wear it.

How’s that whole “smiling at people” thing going? What’s a constant and why can’t I be yours? Jealous. I even bought you a present, but now I’m not bringing it.

    I smile a lot. 🙂 See?

A constant has to do with Lost, which you refuse to watch with me, even though you are my bestie. Bring my present.
